Taxonomy

Necronectes was named by Milne-Edwards (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Mi-m]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Necronectinae.

It was assigned to Portunidae by Rathbun (1935), Glaessner (1969), Vega et al. (1999) and Schweitzer et al. (2002); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Portuninae by Schweitzer et al. (2006); and to Necronectinae by Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).

Gatunia was named by Rathbun (1918).

It was synonymized subjectively with Necronectes by Vega et al. (1999) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Gatuniidae by Rathbun (1918).
Necronectes iranensis was named by Toraby and Yazdi (2002).

It was considered a nomen nudum by Toraby and Yazdi (2002) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
