Megaxantho was named by Vega and Feldmann (2001). Its type is Megaxantho zoque.

It was assigned to Xanthidae by Luque et al. (2017); and to Xanthoidea by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
