Ophthalmoplax was named by Rathbun (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 961]. It is not extant. Its type is Ophthalmoplax stephensoni.

It was assigned to Retroplumidae by Collins and Morris (1975); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macropipidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
