Palaeodromites was named by Milne-Edwards (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 961]. Its type is Palaeodromites octodentatus.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Dynomenidae by Schweitzer et al. (2003) and Jagt et al. (2007); and to Goniodromitidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2012) and Schweitzer et al. (2016).
