Palaeograpsus was named by Bittner (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 966]. Its type is Palaeograpsus inflatus.
It was assigned to Grapsidae by Quayle and Collins (1981), Morris and Collins (1991), Muller and Collins (1991), Beschin et al. (1994) and Beschin et al. (1998); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eucratopsinae by Schweitzer and Karasawa (2004), Beschin et al. (2009), Beschin et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2013) and Beschin et al. (2016).
