Macrophthalminae was named by Dana (1851). It is extant. Its type is Macrophthalmus.

It was assigned to Ocypodidae by Rathbun (1909), Kesling (1958) and Karasawa (1993); and to Macrophthalmidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
