Palaeopemphix was named by Gemmellaro (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Palaeopemphidae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeopemphidae by Feldmann et al. (2004).
