Palinurus was named by Weber (1795) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Palinuroidea, Palinuridae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palinuridae by Vega et al. (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2015).
