Mesacanthus was named by Traquair (1888). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthoessus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Acanthoessidae by Jordan (1963); to Acanthodidae by Denison (1979); and to Acanthodiformes by Hanke and Wilson (2004).
