Taxonomy
Periacanthus was named by Bittner (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Eo-u]. Its type is Periacanthus horridus. It is the type genus of Periacanthidae.
It was assigned to Majinae by Quayle and Collins (1981); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Majidae by Beschin et al. (1994) and Beschin et al. (2005); to Epialtinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2012) and Ferratges et al. (2014); to Epialtidae by Beschin et al. (2016); and to Periacanthinae by Schweitzer et al. (2020).
