Colotes was named by Erichson (1840). It is extant. It is the type genus of Caulautaires.
It was assigned to Malachiinae by Kirejtshuk and Nel (2008); to Malachiini by Bouchard et al. (2011); to Colotina by Gimmel et al. (2019); and to Colotini by Tihelka et al. (2021).
