Psammocarcinus was named by Milne-Edwards (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo T Ol-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Portunus hericarti. It is the type genus of Psammocarcinidae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Psammocarcinidae by Karasawa et al. (2008) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
