Retrocypoda was named by Via (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Retrocypoda almelae.
It was assigned to Costacoplumidae by Beschin et al. (1996); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Retroplumidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Hyžný and Muller (2010) and Beschin et al. (2012).
