Roemerus was named by Bishop (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 961]. Its type is Roemerus robustus.

It was assigned to Diogenidae by Vega et al. (2006); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); to Dynomenidae by Jagt et al. (2010); to Dromiacea by Schweitzer et al. (2016) and Schweitzer et al. (2016); and to Brachyura by Luque et al. (2017).
