Scyllarus was named by Fabricius (1775) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Scyllaridae.

It was reranked as Cancer (Scyllarus) by Koenig (1825).

It was assigned to Cancer by Koenig (1825); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scyllaridae by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2015).
