Speocarcinus was named by Stimpson (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Speocarcininae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Goneplacidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2002); to Goneplacoidea by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Xanthidae by Beschin et al. (2016); and to Speocarcininae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2012) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
