Symethis was named by Rathbun (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R]. It is extant. Its type is Hippa variolosa. It is the type genus of Symethinae.
It was assigned to Raninidae by Rathbun (1935); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Symethidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Symethinae by van Bakel et al. (2012), Karasawa et al. (2014) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
