Tribolocephalus was named by Ristori (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio]. Its type is Tribolocephalus laevis.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lyreidinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Karasawa et al. (2014) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
