Xantho was named by Leach (1804) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Xanthoidea, Xanthidae, Xanthinae.
It was reranked as Cancer (Xantho) by de Haan (1835).
It was assigned to Cancer by de Haan (1835); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Lorenthey (1907), Tiwari et al. (1997) and Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Xanthinae by Dana (1851), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
