Xanthosia was named by Bell (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1225]. Its type is Xanthosia fossa.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Etyidae by Guinot and Tavares (2001) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
