Xenophthalmus was named by White (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 966]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Xenophthalmidae, Xenophthalminae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Xenophthalminae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
