Gammarus was named by Fabricius (1775) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Gammaridae.

It was assigned to Agonata by Fabricius (1775); to Gammaridae by Brooks et al. (1969); and to Amphipoda by Sepkoski (2002).
