Vaugonia oregonensis was named by Poulton (1979). Its type specimen is USNM 219913, 219911-219915, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS Mesozoic loc. 27359, which is in a Pliensbachian marine limestone/sandstone in the Suplee Formation of Oregon.
