Ilybius was named by Erichson (1832). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Colymbetes by LeConte (1861).

It was assigned to Agabini by Nilsson (2001); to Dytiscidae by Bidashko et al. (1995) and Hayashi et al. (2005); and to Agabinae by Bouchard et al. (2011).
