Lethocerus was named by Mayr (1853). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lethocerinae.
It was assigned to Belostomatidae by Říha and Kukalová (1967) and Miller (1983); and to Lethocerinae by Nel and Paicheler (1992), Nel and Waller (2006), Ribeiro et al. (2018) and Moura-Júnior et al. (2021).
