Taxonomy
Scolytus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Scolytinae, Scolytini.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Müller (1776) and Latreille (1796); to Bostrichini by Latreille (1802); and to Scolytini by Wood and Bright (1992), Petrov and Zherikhin (2000), Bouchard et al. (2011), Legalov (2015) and Poinar and Legalov (2019).
