Aleochara was named by Gravenhorst (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aleocharidae, Aleocharini.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Gravenhorst (1802); and to Aleocharini by Pasnik and Kubisz (2002) and Yamamoto et al. (2016).
