Taxonomy
Lophidiaster pygmaeus was named by Spencer (1913). Its type specimen is Syntypes BNHM E 13263-4 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Astropecten pygmaeus by Rasmussen (1950) and Müller (1953).
