Asterias cotteswoldia was named by Murchison (1845). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Astropecten cotteswoldiae by Forbes (1848), Morris (1854), Wright (1857), Dujardin and Hupé (1862), Wright (1863), Schilling (1870), Quenstedt (1876), Fraas (1886), de Loriol (1887), Mercier (1935) and Hérenger (1944); it was recombined as Crenaster cottaldina by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Crenaster cotteswoldiae by Pictet (1857); it was recombined as Archastropecten cotteswoldiae by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Pentasteria (Archastropecten) cotteswoldiae by Spencer and Wright (1966).

H. Hess 1955Abacinal plate rounded in external view. Enlarged tubercles for articulation of spines on the inferomarginal organized in a distal row and a set of three on the abradial margin. Actinolateral fields with 3 rows of plates in the disc and the proximal part of the arm. Spine-pits numerous, dense covering the external face of the superomarginal plate. Mouth angle plate very large and wide.
