Glyptopleura was named by Girty (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,74,773]. It is the type genus of Glyptopleuridae.

It was assigned to Glyptopleuridae by Girty (1910); to Amphissitidae by Hoare and Mapes (2000); and to Palaeocopida by Sepkoski (2002).
