Herpestes paludinosus was named by Cuvier (1829). It is extant.

It was recombined as Athylax paludinosus by Gray (1865); it was recombined as Mungos paludinosus by Lönnberg (1912); it was recombined as Atilax paludinosus by Baker (1992).
