Taxonomy
Galerella was named by Gray (1864). It is extant. Its type is Herpestes ochraceus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Herpestes by Mivart (1882).

It was assigned to Herpestidae by Peigné et al. (2005) and Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
