Taxonomy
Herpestes sanguineus was named by Rüppell (1835). It is extant.

It was recombined as Mungos sanguineus by Heller (1911) and Lönnberg (1912); it was recombined as Galerella sanguinea by Schwarz (1935) and Peigné et al. (2005).
