Cynocephalus anubis was named by Cuvier (1824). It is extant.

It was recombined as Simia anubis by Fischer (1829); it was recombined as Papio anubis by Owen (1853), Hill (1959), Dandelot and Prévost (1972) and Zinner et al. (2008).
