Taxonomy
Kirkbyella was named by Coryell and Booth (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov C Mosc-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Kirkbyellidae.

It was assigned to Palaeocopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kirkbyellidae by Tilman (1984), Crasquin-Soleau (1997) and Liebau (2005).
