Gulo larvatus was named by Smith (1827). It is extant. It is the type species of Paguma.
It was recombined as Paradoxurus larvatus by Temminck (1841); it was recombined as Paguma larvata by Gray (1831), Allen (1929), Davis (1958) and Bertram and Biewener (1990).
