Lepus cuniculus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lepus (Oryctolagus) cuniculus by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927); it was recombined as Oryctolagus cuniculus by Thomas (1911), Capasso Barbato and Gliozzi (1995) and Worthy (1997).
