Taxonomy
Manis (Phataginus) tricuspis was named by Rafinesque (1821) [Rafinesque seems to cite Manis tetradactyla Linnaeus 1758 and Manis macroura Erxleben 1777 as synonyms, but his type specimen is a newly seen specimen in the "Museum du Lycée d'histoire naturelle de New York" from "Guineé"; year uncertain, as the actual volume is dated as 1820 but later authors cite it as 1821]. It is extant.
It was recombined as Manis tricuspis by Botha and Gaudin (2007).
