Taxonomy
Ponera umbra was named by Popov (1933). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Kurganskij district, province of Kuban, which is in a Miocene terrestrial sandstone in the Russian Federation.

It was recombined as Ponerites umbrus by Dlussky (1981) and Bolton (2012).
