Taxonomy
Crenaster rupellensis was named by d'Orbigny (1850).

It was recombined as Astropecten rupellensis by Dujardin and Hupé (1862), de Loriol (1887) and Cottreau (1935); it was recombined as Archastropecten rupellensis by Hess (1955).
