Taxonomy
Luidia etchegoinensis was named by Blake (1973). Its type specimen is Holotype 10652, UCMP B-5046 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Asteroidea, Etchegoin Fm., Kettleman Hills, Avenal, which is in a Pliocene coastal sandstone in the Etchegoin Formation of California.

Blake 1973Alternata Group Luidia, inferomarginal outline ovate, oral surface outline linear, spine bases prominent; inner face step gentle, superambulacral boss weakly developed, distal articulation ridge long, symmetrical; ambulacral body massive, long, strongly triangular, surface of articulation with neighboring ambulacral very low; adambulacral pentagonal, with prominent medial spine bases, depression for the proximal face muscle abruptly tapering; paxillae massive, bear massive, densely spaced, tablet-shaped granules.
