Soanella was named by Kanygin (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 999]. It is the type genus of Soanellidae.

It was assigned to Palaeocopida by Sepkoski (2002); to Quadrijugatoriidae by Melnikova (2010); and to Soanellidae by Salas (2011).
