Terrakea japonica was named by Tazawa (2008). Its type specimen is NU-B702, a shell, and it is a mold. Its type locality is KF217, Ishikagorisawa, Imo Prefecture, which is in a Wordian marine shale in the Kamiyasse Formation of Japan.
