Taxonomy
Holopea newtonensis was named by Whitfield (1882). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Newtonville, which is in a Chesterian carbonate limestone in the Maxville Formation of Ohio.

It was recombined as Leptoptygma newtonensis by Hoare (2004).
