Candona was named by Baird (1845). It is extant. It is the type genus of Candonidae.
It was assigned to Leperditiidae by Guthörl (1934); to Candonini by Martens and Savatenalinton (2011); and to Candoninae by Bertels (1972) and Carignano (2012).
