Rotalina hirsuta was named by d'Orbigny (1839).

It was recombined as Obandyella hirsuta by Haman et al. (1980); it was recombined as Hirsutella hirsuta by Chaisson and D’Hondt (2000); it was recombined as Globorotalia (Hirsutella) hirsuta by Bandy (1972), Kennett and Srinavasan (1983) and Lam and Leckie (2020).
