Rhynchonella fissicostata was named by Suess (1854).

It was recombined as Septaliphoria fissicostata by Dagys (1963) and Xu (1978); it was recombined as Fissirhynchia fissicostata by Pearson (1977), Ager et al. (1978), Iordan (1993), Sandy (1994), Siblik (1998) and Siblik and Bryda (2005).
