Taxonomy
Eurypteridae was named by Burmeister (1845). Its type is Eurypterus. It is the type family of Eurypteracea.

It was assigned to Eurypterida by Guthörl (1934); to Eurypteracea by Størmer (1955); and to Eurypteroidea by Tetlie (2002), Tetlie (2006) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
