Pecten equivalvis was named by Sowerby (1816). It is the type species of Pseudopecten, Pseudopecten (Pseudopecten).
It was recombined as Pseudopecten equivalvis by Douville (1879) and Damborenea (2002); it was recombined as Pseudopecten (Pseudopecten) aequivalvis by Valls et al. (2004); it was recombined as Pseudopecten (Pseudopecten) equivalvis by Inesta et al. (1990), Gahr (2002) and Paredes et al. (2013).
