Periphaena was named by Ehrenberg (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno R]. It is extant. Its type is Periphaena decora.

It was assigned to Coccodiscinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
